Harness the sun

As climate change becomes an ever more serious threat to the health of the planet, Green Mountain Camp is committed to taking steps to address what we can do to mitigate our own carbon footprint. To that end, GMC is launching “Harness the Sun” - a fundraising effort to purchase 51 solar panels in a local community solar array to cover 75% of the camp’s annual electric needs. “Harness the Sun” is a continuation of the camp’s ongoing efforts to address all campus improvements and repairs with an eye on sustainability and lowering our carbon and chemical input into the environment.

As part of our 2017 centennial year capital improvements, we switched our swimming pool from chemical cleaning compounds to salt water and, from the ground up, we replaced the Junior Bathhouse, adding a urine collection stall. The urine collected eventually ends up as agricultural fertilizer. In a phrase, we are striving to make a GREEN(er) Mountain Camp!

Even though our campus is not geographically situated for adequate solar collection, we plan to have a small array of solar panels on the actual campus so that campers can become acquainted with the technology.

The local solar array (near exit 1) is being developed by Integrated Solar, and they have already made significant contributions to the “Harness the Sun” campaign.

Please consider making a donation to cover the cost of a solar panel or organizing a group of family and friends to do so. A donation in any amount is always welcomed and appreciated.

Giving levels include:

Aditi - $1,600 purchases a full solar panel

This Hindu Goddess is one of the most powerful and popular figures among all the divine powers. Keeper of the light that illuminates all life and ensures consciousness. She assists those seeking a smooth path to what they are looking for. Donating a full panel helps us take a major step along the way.

Bastet - $1,200 purchases 3/4 of a solar panel

The Egyptian Lion Goddess. Everyday Bastet rides with her father, Ra, across the sky protecting him. Due to her vigilant duties, she is nicknamed the Lady of the East, Goddess of the Rising Sun, and the Sacred and All Seeing Eye. Help us roar through our campaign!

Sunna - $800 purchases a half solar panel

The Nordic Goddess of the Sun. Her sun chariot is pulled across the sky by two horses, All-Swift and Early Walker. Daily they are chased by the wolf, Skoll, who keeps them on course. Sunna (also called All-Bright, Everglow and Fair Wheel) mostly considers the chase a fun game. Laugh with us as we keep ahead of the wolf and reach our goal!

Walu - $400 purchases a 1/4 solar panel

The Australian Aboriginal Goddess performs a daily ritual. She paints herself with red and yellow ochre, and lights a bark torch. As she starts and ends her journey across the sky some of the paint spills onto the clouds to create the sunrise and the sunset. At end of the day Walu puts out her torch and travels underground through the night to return to her camp. This underworld journey is important in the designation of the Sun as female, whose torch bringing warmth and fertility to the interior of the Earth, causing plants to grow. Your donation warms our hearts and helps us grow into a more responsible organization.
